Jug Fishing With A Catfish Jug

Jug Fishing For Catfish

For centuries anglers have been targeting catfish with methods other than fishing with the conventional rod and reel. Popular methods have included:

  • Trotlines - A long piece of nylon twine with swivels attached and hooks running off of these swivels via an additional piece of nylon twine often referred to as a "dropper" or "drop".
  • Limb Lines - A piece of nylon twine traditional hung over the water from a flexible tree branch that allows a hook to be tied on the end a bait suspended at or just below the water line.
  • Bank Lines - Similar to limb lines but the angler takes a long stick (PVC or long pieces of bamboo are very common). The pipe or bamboo is pushed into the ground at an angle hanging over the water and a piece of nylon twine is attached with a hook at the end.
  • Yo-Yo's or Mechanical Fishers - A mechanical device made from metal that as attached to a fixed object above the water line. The line is pulled from the device and a mechanism locks the line in place. When a fish bites the hook the pressure of it trips a mechanism causing the hook to be set and the line is automatically retrieved by the device.

In addition to these popular techniques the sport of jug fishing is a form of setline fishing, and jug fishing is a sport that has gained tremendous popularity among catfish anglers, especially in the last ten years or so.

Some other common names for jug fishing are:

  • Catfish jugging
  • Catfish juggin'
  • Jugline fishing
  • Noodle fishing
  • Milk jug fishing

In this article we will take a look at what the basics are behind jug fishing are and also the reasons why jug fishing has gained so much popularity over the past ten years.

Jug fishing gets its name from the device used to float the line on the top of the water, which is commonly referred to as a jug.

While initially when jug fishing became popular anglers would use a plastic milk jug as the actual catfish jug, many anglers quickly learned that the milk jug was not a good option for jug fishing. Milk jugs are very flimsy and have tendency not only to collapse but also to break apart especially when pulled deep under the water by a big ol' catfish.

As anglers began to notice that the milk jugs were not a functional alternative for jug fishing, many new ideas were born in boats and garages across the United States.

There are hundreds of variations of catfish jugs, too many to list but some of the more basic common items used are two liter soda bottles, twenty ounce soda bottles, and juglines made from swimming pool noodles (closed cell polyethylene foam). The soda bottles are the basics of these designs with most swimming pool noodle catfish jug designs being more advanced and more functional than any other design. In addition to the homemade catfish jug, many commercially manufactured models have been developed and sold over the years. The most well known of these commercial models is Redneck's Juglines.

The basics behind jug fishing for catfish are pretty simple.

The anchored catfish jugline

The anchored jugline is one on which the angler takes the catfish jug and attaches a long piece of braided nylon twine with a weight at the end, typically ranging from.5 to 1 lb. Above the weight swivels are attached and nylon twine is attached to these swivels with a fishing hook at the end. The hooks are then baited and deployed in the water.

The anchored jug is designed to be set in one location and remain in the location until the angler returns and retrieves the catfish (or empty jug).

The drift catfish jug

Drifting catfish jugs are also often referred to as a free floating juglines. The same basic principle applies but with a drifting model the angler attaches a shorter piece of nylon twine to the jug and ties a hook on the opposite end. Often times a small split shot weight is attached above the hook, which is then baited.

The jug line is deployed in the water after it is baited and because it is not weighted heavily it is allowed to drift across the water with the movement of waves and wind, until a catfish bites. The angler then retrieves the setup and the catfish, rebaits and deploys it again.

Because of the movement of these setups, anglers traditionally sit with the jugs and wait for the fish.

Popularity of fishing with a catfish jug

The popularity of fishing with jugline setups has increased dramatically in recent years. Much of this is due to the fact that anglers desire to catch catfish with setlines, but doing so can require a lot of preparation and work both on and off the water.

With jug fishing techniques, the angler has the option to setup the lines prior to getting to the lake or river and on arrival can immediately deploy them, saving a lot of time, and creating an opportunity to immediately start catching fish.

The other reason for the increase in popularity is the mobility of the setups. Trotlines, limb lines and other setline setups require significant effort to setup at times and if they are setup in water that is not producing catfish. In these situations it means waiting it out to see if the fish eventually come in to the area, or doing more work and moving.

With the use of a catfish jug, moving or relocating to new water or more productive waters for catfishing can be performed in a matter of a minute or less in most situations.
