How To Make Catfish Jugs For Jugging
If you have been talking to friends or fishing buddies or doing research online about jug fishing and decided to make some juglines you are probably thoroughly confused at this point on how to make catfish jugs.
There is a wealth of resources online but there is also a lot of really confusing information and many people who start trying to learn how to make catfish jugs get frustrated with all the misinformation and give up their hopes of catching catfish with juglines or resort to buying commercially manufactured catfish jugs.
There are numerous commercially manufactured fishing juglines available on the market today but the cost of these is usually much higher than building your own, so like anything else you need to ask yourself whether you are willing to sacrifice your time to make your own or willing to pay a little extra money to buy something that is already made.
Before proceeding with making your catfish jugs you need to first determine whether or not you want to use free floating catfish jugs or anchored catfish jugs. Let's look at the difference between the two.
Free Floating Juglines - Free floating models have no weight or very little weight added to the line and are meant to be deployed in the water and allowed to drift or float across the water. Because of this, they can travel great distances with current and wind and should be reserved for those that plan to stay on the lake or river with their juglines.
Anchored Juglines - Anchored juglines have a weight (typically one to two pounds) added at the bottom so they remain relatively stationary when deployed. This setup is best for anglers that plan on setting their catfish jug and leaving it at the lake or river overnight or all day, or that plan on moving around to different areas of the water and coming back to them.
Specifically in this article, we will talk about how to make anchored catfish jugs.
How To Make Catfish Jugs
- Determine what type of actual jug you want to use (the floating device). If you are just getting started you might be looking at something simple like a bleach bottle or a two liter soda bottle. These are sufficient for most beginners but the down side is they don't perform as well as some of the more advanced models out there, and they also take up much more room. Do some research online and check out different homemade designs and commercially available juglines (like Redneck's Juglines) and then build or buy your floats.
- Determine the deepest water you will be fishing and then cut a piece of number eighteen braided nylon twine that is about eight to ten feet longer than the deepest water you will be fishing. Attach the line to your catfish jug using a slip knot.
- Attach a weight to the opposite end of the jug that weighs one to two pounds. Many anglers prefer to use custom weights but anything that weighs one to two pounds will work to get you started.
- Cut several leaders twelve inches long from number nine braided nylon twine and double them up and attach your fishing hook to one end by sliding the doubled line through the hook eye and then pulling the hook back through the doubled line.
- Attach two swivels to your mainline using a cat's paw knot. Swivels should be attached 3 feet and 6 feet above the weight. Some anglers prefer to use more than two hooks but this can be dangerous so be careful if you decide to add more. In addition many states have laws that limit the number of hooks that can be used so be sure to research your local laws before getting started.
- Attach the leaders and hooks to the swivels by pulling the open end of the doubled line into the eye of the swivel and pulling it through, and then pulling the hook through the doubled line and pulling it tight.
- Wrap your line around your catfish jugs and make sure you secure your hooks. You have now learned how to make catfish jugs and you can repeat the process and build more.
Make sure you put the big fish back and fish responsibly so we will have big catfish to catch for generations to come.
