Noodle Fishing For Catfish
Noodle fishing is a slang term used for jug fishing for catfish that has gained its name from the use of closed cell polyethylene foam that is been incorporated into the design of fishing jugs in recent years. Noodle fishing is popular for a number of different species of fish but especially for catfish.
For many years several manufacturers have been selling commercially available catfish jugs made from this closed cell polyethylene foam and anglers across the United States have followed suit by making their own homemade catfish jugs by using swimming pool noodles, which are a form of the closed cell polyethylene foam.
Noodle fishing has gained increasing popularity because it is an incredibly effective way to fish for catfish which allows anglers to get a lot of hooks in the water in a relatively short period of time. In addition to the effectiveness and ease of use noodle fishing is also popular because it is relatively inexpensive to get started with.
Catfish jugs have also increased in popularity because they are much easier to deploy and retrieve when fishing than other traditional setline methods (like trotlines) and they are also significantly safer to use than trotlines.
A variety of basic designs are often used which can be incredibly simple like just cutting a piece of the swimming pool foam and adding a piece of braided nylon twine and a hook. Even more popular though are more complex designs that "trip" when a fish bites and causes the fishing jug to stand up in the water, alerting the angler that there is a catfish on the line.
These can be fished in either anchored or free floating designs. With anchored setups there is a weight on the bottom that holds the line in relatively the same area when deployed. Drifting setups are deployed with little to know weight and are allowed to drift or float across the water to catch catfish.
Noodle fishing is also a great way for anglers to learn where to catch catfish as well as learn catfish patterns on new bodies of water. The ability to deploy the jugs across several different areas and cover a lot of water at one time puts the angler at an advantage to learn how and where the catfish are biting.
Once a pattern is noticed with the catfishing jug lines the angler can then return to the productive areas and start catfishing with rod and reel. In addition similar waters can be located to work on develop a pattern for catching catfish.
