How To Make PVC Catfish Jugs

Jug fishing is a fun and effective way to catch a nice mess of cats regardless of what type of water body you fish in or what your target species is. Blue, channel and flathead catfish can all be caught on juglines and they can be used in lakes, reservoirs, streams, creeks and rivers. Anglers can use juglines to catch a nice mess of smaller cats or can use them to go after a monster.

Before you start jugging for cats you need to make sure you research your state and local laws and assure that this is legal in your state, because not all states allow the use of PVC catfish jugs. Some also have restrictions on the number of hooks and other regulations, so you need to make sure you are always fishing legally.

In addition to making sure you are staying legal, make sure you are fishing in an ethical manner as well. Always throw the big cats back so they can be caught another day and never leave your jugs in the water for an extended period of time.

If your wanting to learn how to make pvc catfish jugs there are several different types of these jugs that can be made. Throughout the years I have been catfishing I have seen many different variations and setups and all work with varying degrees of success.

The best that are available are designs often referred to as "fishing noodles" or "flagging juglines".

One of the first PVC catfish jugs to ever hit the fishing world was a very simple design. Take a piece of 2.5 inch thin wall PVC pipe and cut it into ten inch pieces. Measure five inches down the length of each piece and mark a hole. This is the first step in making pvc catfish jugs.

Now cut a piece of foam swimming pool noodle twelve inches long and using a twisting motion force the noodle down inside the thin wall pipe. Once the noodle is fully inserted in the pipe you should have one inch sticking out of either end.

Take a quarter inch drill bit and drill a hole through the pipe, through the noodle and back out the other side of the pipe. This may sound like a lot of work but it is really easy, and don't worry because your almost done making your pvc catfish jugs.

Now cut a four foot piece of #9 braided nylon twine and insert it through the hole you drilled and pull it out the other side. Pull the line back together on the outside of the jugline and tie to together using a slip knot. Once complete go to the loose end of the twine and tie on an Eagle Claw L197F Circle Hook in size 7/0 using a Palomar knot. Once your hook is secure go a few inches above the hook and crimp on a small split shot weight.

Go to your fishing hole and bait the hooks with your preferred bait, like lye soap catfish bait and throw the jugs out in shallow water. Stay close by and watch for them to start bobbing and moving because chances are you will be catching cats with your PVC catfish jugs in no time.
